William Wallace Hanged, Drawn, and Quartered at Smithfield

William Wallace, the Scottish knight and military leader who had defied English rule for nearly a decade, was captured in August 1305 and swiftly tried for treason and atrocities against English civilians. Brought before a tribunal in Westminster Hall, he denied the charge of treason on the grounds that he had never sworn allegiance to the English crown, but the verdict was a foregone conclusion.

On 23 August 1305, Wallace was dragged through the streets of London to Smithfield, where he was hanged, cut down while still alive, disembowelled, beheaded, and his body divided into four parts. His head was displayed on London Bridge; his limbs were sent to Newcastle, Berwick, Stirling, and Perth as a warning to those who would resist English rule. He became the most enduring symbol of Scottish resistance.

John Smith Hanged at Melbourne Gaol for the Murder of a Miner at Fryer's Creek

In 1853, John Smith and Henry Turner forced their way into the hut of John Warren at Fryer's Creek, demanding gold. When Warren could not produce it, the pair shot him in the eye with a revolver at close range. Warren was found blind and bleeding, groping through the bush. He died shortly after, the bullet having shattered a fragment of his temporal bone into the brain.

Both men were tried, convicted, and hanged at Melbourne Gaol on 23 August 1853, before a large crowd assembled outside the walls.

Smith, attended by Catholic priests in his final days, was brought to acknowledge that the sentence he was about to suffer was just and merited.

At Melbourne Gaol on 23 August 1853, Henry Turner and his accomplice John Smith were hanged for the murder of John Warren at Fryer's Creek. The two men had entered Warren's hut demanding gold, and when he could not produce it, they shot him in the eye with a revolver at close range. Warren was found blind and bleeding in the bush, groping through the scrub; he died shortly after from a bone splinter that had penetrated his brain.

Turner was attended in his final days by the Reverend Mr Studdert of St. James' Church, while Smith received the Catholic priests Fathers Shiel, Cunningham, and Hayes. Both men were executed before a considerable crowd, and neither had entertained any hope of reprieve.

Turner acknowledged the justice of his sentence before his death, as did Smith, who was brought to admit that the punishment he was about to suffer was just and merited.

The Wild Scotchman: Death of Queensland Bushranger James Macpherson

James Alpin Macpherson, known as the Wild Scotchman, was one of Queensland's most notorious bushrangers before his capture and imprisonment. Released from prison in 1874, he lived out the remainder of his days quietly, working as a stockman and station overseer far from his outlaw past.

Macpherson died on 23 August 1895 at Burketown, Queensland, aged 53, after falling from a horse. The man who had once terrorised the bush met his end not in a blaze of gunfire, but in an ordinary accident on the land he had spent his later years working.

The Vampire of Dusseldorf Kills Two Foster Sisters at a Fairground

Peter Kurten, known as the Vampire of Dusseldorf, murdered two young foster sisters at a fairground on 23 August 1929, in one of a string of attacks that terrorised the city throughout that year. Born in Cologne in 1883, the eldest of 13 children, Kurten endured a childhood of brutal poverty and domestic terror, and had already demonstrated violent and sadistic tendencies from boyhood, including drowning two playmates on the Rhine at the age of nine.

His killing spree in 1929 left Dusseldorf gripped by fear. He was eventually arrested, tried, and convicted of nine murders, though police suspected him in as many as 68 attacks. His victims were overwhelmingly women and girls. He was executed by guillotine in July 1931. Shortly before his death, he asked the prison psychiatrist whether he would still be able to hear his own blood gushing from his neck after the blade fell. When told his brain might function for a few seconds, Kurten replied: 'That would be the pleasure to end all pleasures.'

What Our Guests Say

A Great Night Out

Our guide was knowledgeable and fun. It was interesting to learn about Brisbane’s dark past. A great night out!

Amazing and Interesting Night!

Walking around won’t be the same after having this experience. It was an amazing
experience learning about all the dark crime that has gone on in my hometown.

Great local adventure

It was a fun experience with our lovely guide. You learn quite a few things about how criminals got dealt with in the past. In quite a few spots, I was surprised at the amount of the old buildings that are still there. A nice evening walk too.

Great Rocks Tour and Amazing Guide!

Our guide has to be one of the most enthusiastic and engaging guides I have ever met. This tour was a very nicely priced great way to get an overview of the rocks area, and I learnt new things and saw new places, which I wasn’t sure was possible.

Great Experience for Something a Bit Different

This tour was fantastic!! We toured around some really interesting unknown alleyways around the Rocks area and we were guided by an amazing, insightful and great storytelling guide. Would highly recommend this to anyone to enjoy a the combination of history and true crime thrills.

Great Experience

I thoroughly enjoyed this night. Tour guide was informative and totally enthusiastic in her story telling. Her passion for true crime history was clearly evident mixed in with some great humour that you just had to laugh at.

Unique Experience

Our tour guide was just fantastic. The tour was worth every cent and incredibly unique. We loved hearing all the true crime razor gang stories, learning about the key players of the underworld and seeing their stomping ground.

Fun Night Out

Our guide was full of energy and so engaging in her story telling of the Razor Gangs. So amazing to hear their stories and see where they lived and conducted business.

Razor Gang Tour

We wanted to try something a little different and that’s just what we got! Our tour guide was super bubbly and a natural story teller and we enjoyed walking around areas that we never even knew existed, learning about the Razor Gang stories of the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Will be Recommending the Crime Cruise to Everyone!

I loved the stories told by our hosts! They were delivered with enthusiasm and were super interesting. I did not know about any of the true crime stories. It was a gorgeous sunny day, perfect for being out on the harbour.

Relaxing and Educational

Excellent tour combined with being on the Sydney Harbour for the morning, made for a relaxing experience and we did indeed learn alot from Sydney’s sordid past.

Fantastic! Thank you.

We had a wonderful time. The Stories were great and told with great character, with very warm and caring service, felt valued.

Top Marks

We had a terrific night with the tour. Our guide was informative and clearly loved her role and the histories of the stories she was telling. And it had just the right amount of theatrics backed by fact.

Tour Guide was Awesome!

The tour was great! Really interesting stories, great locations, friendly, attentive and engaging
guide, and overall a great evening and experience. 😊

Thoroughly Researched and Presented Making the Stories Come Alive

I’ve been a crime reporter for various UK newspapers for many years and worked at the Old Bailey and High Court so I appreciate detailed knowledge. Our tour guide always had answers to questions extending the stories and that was great, as she was not simply regurgitating a script.

Historically Fascinating

A fascinating recount of Fortitude Valley’s shady past. The crime, the corruption,
the movers & shakers of the time make for a truly interesting experience.

We loved it and will definitely do more tours!

We loved the little details and how the dominoes all fall at the end. We been on tours before that discuss briefly crimes like the whiskey a-go-go but had no idea how deep it ran and how all these events were interconnected.

My Appetite has been Whet

Our guide was brilliantly educated on the content, and extremely engaging and entertaining. We had an amazing experience learning about OUR city and the dark past that I was thankfully oblivious to when growing up in the 70s and 80s.

Truly a fascinating tour!

I didn’t know this side of Newcastle’s history and it’s really interesting! Our guide was excellent
guide and very knowledgable, and her sense of humour was quite grand indeed! All around,
quite an awesome tour, with an awesome guide, and fascinating history.

Night Tour of the City!

Highly recommend a tour of the city in the night with Dark Stories. I saw Newcastle in a different way. Historical, factual and quite remarkable. Our guide was EXCEPTIONAL going above and beyond and so full of knowledge. I had a very enjoyable time. Thank you.

Terrific Tour

A friend and I had a wonderful tour with our guide. She was so warm, friendly and knowledgeable. The stories were so fascinating and left us wanting more. One story in particular was the stuff of a Stephen King novel! I can’t wait to revisit Newy to do the tour again! Highly recommended!

Awesome Crime Tour

Great tour! Our guide was delightful and witty. Wear comfy shoes, and don’t worry, you’ll
walk into dimly lighted corners of the town, but we weren’t murdered.

Great Night Out With Friends

The whole tour was fantastic; our guide was both entertaining and informative. Such a great
way to check out this beautiful town and learn some of Maitland’s dark history

Interesting and Entertaining

We did the Maitland True Crime Tour with a lovely guide. She gave us all the story
information with a delightfully entertaining, sometimes quirky twist.
